WHAT TO WATCH FOR:Expected Team Strength - I believe that we will have a quality pitching staff led by senior Citadel commit Riley Ballard. We also have some quality guys behind Ballard including junior Citadel commit Hudson Sprovero, 8th grader Nolyn Nickels, junior Bo Brabham, sophomore Wyatt Muirheid, sophomore Chris Polm, and junior Gunnar Haulbrooks.

QUOTE FROM THE COACH:

After losing 8 starters from last years Lower State Championship team, there is a lot of unknown with this group. We are returning a few key contributors from last years team in Hudson Sprovero, Riley Ballard, Joe Furse, and Bo Brabham also got some action on last years team. With only 3 seniors and 4 juniors in the program, we will have to rely on some young ones to contribute. Good thing is that we have some pretty good younger players. There is still a lot of unknown with them, but I do see talent and believe they will give us a chance to compete.

HANAHAN, S.C. (WCIV) — Eggs prices are at an all-time high, thanks to inflation woes and a bird flu outbreak.

As a result, more people are turning to backyard chicken coops nationwide. But the city of Hanahan is bucking that trend, with a long-standing ban on keeping animals. There was a big movement back in 2019 to try and get the ban lifted.

With egg prices continuing to spike, the number of households with backyard chickens has nearly doubled, but in Hanahan, these guys are a no-go.

"I did have it in the back of my head," said Hanahan Mayor Christie Rainwater. "I wonder if this will make a resurrection."

A long-standing ban on owning chickens in Hanahan was passed back in 1992.

"Our current ordinance shares that there are no farm animals, including chickens, allowed in Hanahan," Rainwater said. "Many other cities in the region do allow them, but we didn't."

A movement in 2019 worked to get the ban lifted, but ultimately that vote failed.

"I voted yes, but the rest of the council voted no," said Rainwater. "So once something doesn't pass it, you need to have a year before the same ordinance can be brought up again without any substance changes. And we felt like there really wasn't a strong push at that time from our council side of things to have that."

Rainwater said that this time around, despite expensive egg prices, she hasn't seen the same passion for removing the ban as she did six years ago.

"We did have one person from our community come to our most recent council meeting, and they shared that they would like to see this brought up again for change. But it was only one person," Rainwater said.

"And following that meeting, we did not get any additional emails. Not saying it will or won't happen, but at this time it just seemed like a little bit of curiosity but not a movement or anything like that."

But convincing the city council isn't the only obstacle.

"There are several HOA subdivisions in the city of Hanahan, and so that's something that needs to be considered as well because this wouldn't just blanket allow chickens to be throughout the community," Rainwater said. "If your HOA rules, which most of them do say that you can't have chickens, you still can't have chickens."

The mayor also says there are those in the community who want to keep the ban. And if it comes before the council again she hopes both sides find common ground.

"I think there really does need to be a collaboration between those that want it and those that don't, to say how can we provide this but still be respectful and honor those that don't want it," Rainwater said.

More than 11 million households in the United States have backyard chickens. But in Hanahan, the coop remains closed.
